Taranui

Hakataramea

A lifestyle property, built in the 1980's in the American 'Sunset Homes' style.  The original brief was for a 'lean-to' extension housing an enlarged kitchen and library.

The more we thought about it, the more natural it seemed to marry the distinctive A-frame structure with a sympathetic addition.  Although this increased the size of the project, it was a true investment in the future.  The home looks more complete than originally, and the addition looks truly identical to the existing structure.

The hot summers of the area, and the client's request for a large library meant that windows to the East were not wanted.  Although this part of the design is unusual for us, future owners can fairly easily add a window as required.

The kitchen design by 'Kitchen Studios' is great, and the Client's bold use of colour is spectacular.

it is worth mentioning here a major difficulty we had with this project.  We underestimated how much hassle the septic tank would be and this resulted in some very upset clients for a considerable length of time.  After much to and fro with the Regional Council, and many hours of free work by us, we reached a solution.  Despite the hiccup, the clients are extremely pleased with their project, and the enhanced living which comes from a larger kitchen, and extra rooms for family summer holidays.

The Clients are rightfully proud of their decision to invest in the future, and design something far nicer than and larger than the original brief.  Too often in NZ, unsympathetic additions are slapped onto a home with no concern for the appearance, only the cheapest price.
